The 20-year-old has not featured for Palace since he was hooked at half time in September’s Carabao Cup third round win over his former side Millwall.
Since making the £14m switch in January, he has racked up only 258 minutes in red and blue.
Palace accept that Esse is not playing enough for his development and subsequently made him available for their Under-21 squad, where he has featured in their last three games – scoring twice and registering two assists.
Esse joined the England Under-21 camp last week, despite being left out of the initial squad, after Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly stepped up to the seniors.
Ahead of their 2027 U21 Euro qualifier against Andorra this evening, Carsley urged patience with Esse, noting that moving from the Championship to the top-flight as a teenager with a sizeable price tag added extra weight upon his shoulders.
“The squad will change,” said Carsley. “We’ll have lots of players that come in and come out because of the nature of this.
“We have to look at as many players as we can that are at the level.
“It’s more important that in two years’ time that the squad is ready to go to a major championship, if we make it.
“I’m very impressed with Romain. It’s not easy to make a move from one club to another.
“Then you add the price tag and the pressure of the league. It’s a big step between the Championship and the Premier League.
“We have to be patient with these young players and understand that they are young – they need time and support.
“But he’s definitely going in the right direction. He’s got a brilliant attitude.
“He’s a player that I’ve enjoyed working with. I left him out of the initial squad. But the fact that he got called up as we needed a player, shows you are never too far away from the squad.
“That goes for a lot of other players that aren’t with us. We watch games every weekend and there are a lot of players that we’re monitoring.”
